FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. — Fairfax County police are currently investigating a multi-vehicle crash that left one man dead and five others injured near Fort Belvoir on Friday afternoon.
The crash, which involved three vehicles, happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Route 1 (Richmond Highway) at Pohick Road. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and five others were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Richmond Highway just before Pohick Road. The Silverado rear-ended a 2017 Subaru Forester which was stopped at the red light. The Silverado continued into the intersection hitting a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado that was trying to turn left from Pohick Road to southbound Richmond Highway, Fairfax County police said in a release Saturday morning.
Police identified the man killed as the driver of the driver of the Silverado, 33-year-old Ralph J. Edwards III.
Detectives are working to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
