Grayhill’s Generation 2 MMI Controllers and CANbus keypads inherited highlights of the legacy products while featuring new benefits in meeting ever-changing market demands. These devices are well suited for ISO 13849 Safety Rated Vehicles. Both the new 3J and 3K can perform self-diagnostics include supply voltage monitoring, indicator “LED On” verification, and button malfunction detection. In our design, we have lowered the above-panel thickness to about half of the original, while changing the installation requirement to a simple snap-in from the front. This is particularly advantageous as it no longer calls out for hand tools and the need to get behind the panel for installation and troubleshooting. When the system is inactive, the device would go into a low power mode that draws less than 1mA of current; it can be reactivated via any key press or CAN message.
Similar to the first generation, the new 3J and 3K are customizable in various ways including legends, indicators, backlight colors and knob colors (for 3J). Overall, the Jog Dial would be an easy replacement of the legacy product as it has the same field-tested reliability and offers software backwards compatibility.
Grayhill’s legacy Series 3J Vehicle Display Controller (VDC) is an operator interface device for on-board software. The VDC features an optical rotary encoder for scrolling through menu options and a center pushbutton for selecting options. Five “hot key” pushbuttons are placed around the center shaft to quickly pull up the most common functions. Legends on the hot keys can be chosen from a library of ISO standard legends or customized with new symbols. An optional 8-way joystick provides cursor control for navigating on-screen. CANopen and J1939 protocols are available as standard options.
Grayhill’s first generation CANbus Keypads are also available with J1939 or CANopen protocol to seamlessly integrate with on-board vehicle electronic systems. Their sealed and compact construction make them ideal for agriculture, construction, and mining vehicles and communicate with any of the 3D Series Displays.

Grayhill’s 3D Series displays, 3J joystick, and 3K keypad make up our newest CAN-based off-highway vehicle cab solution. The 3D displays are built for the rugged conditions and harsh environments common in agriculture, construction, and mining vehicles. All displays in the 3D Series undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet the ISO and ANSI specifications, such as environmental seal, temperature range and electrical conditions.
The new 5-inch and 7-inch versatile displays utilize a scratch-resistant, anti-glare window that optically bonds to the LCD to ensure visibility under strong sunlight. The flush mounted displays can blend with any vehicle cab seamlessly and provide a modern look and feel to your design. The displays supports Qt by default and now offer CODESYS as an additional application development option. Grayhill’s own VUI Builder is preloaded for easy integration with an ECU. This software tool is used to create screens and graphic objects that display real-time gauge data, alert messages, clocks/run meters, diagnostics, maintenance information, machine setups and instructions.
