Bicycle Safety and Pennsylvania Laws

When you’re commuting on your bike, you’re likely to share the road with cars. If you know the laws, safety rules, and have the right attitude, you can be a confident, streetwise cyclist.

General Bicycle Law

Pennsylvania’s Vehicle Code considers “pedalcycles” as vehicles and provides that every person riding a pedalcycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and responsibilities applicable to a driver of a vehicle, with certain exceptions discussed below.

If you ride in violation of the traffic laws, you greatly increase your risk of a crash and will likely be found at fault in the event of an accident.

Riding on the Roadway

  • Bikes may be ridden on the shoulder of the road (in the same direction as the flow of traffic) but are not required to do so.

  • Bikes may also ride on the right half of the roadway as follows:

BicyclePA routes and all of the trails and tourism options Pennsylvania provides.

It’s also great to use

Traffic lights in ’s-Hertogenbosch; an interview

“We want people to believe our traffic signals are really helping them. Nobody likes to wait unnecessarily long at a red light. Signals are an aid and they should only be used when there is no alternative.” Words from Eric Greweldinger, the traffic light expert in the municipality of ʼs-Hertogenbosch. The city that came second in this year’s Dutch “Traffic light region of 2016 Election”, after Helmond, also in the province of Brabant.

Waiting times at traffic lights in ’s-Hertogenbosch are kept as reasonable as possible.

I had been meaning to write a post about traffic signals in the Netherlands for a long time, but I soon found out the topic is rather complicated. There are many regional differences and trying to figure out how signals work by observing a traffic light installation proved next to impossible. Green times as well as red times are constantly changing for all traffic

Zoo ordered to stop forcing chimp to spray disinfectant from bicycle

A zoo in Thailand has been slammed for dressing up a chimpanzee and employing him to spray disinfectant from a bicycle.

Authorities in the south-east Asian country have demanded staff at Samutprakarn Crocodile Farm and Zoo in Samut Prakan Province cease the activity immediately after the stunt provoked a backlash.

Concern was raised last week when video footage from the zoo showed a six-year-old him dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and wearing a facemask cycling around with a canister of disinfectant.

The antibacterial liquid sprayed behind the bicycle while the ape cycled around the grounds, while he was also handed a hose to spray down fences.

A chimpanzee was filmed cycling around the zoo as disinfectant sprayed from the back of his bike

Environment minister Varawuth Silpa-archa attended the zoo on Tuesday to order the owner to stop the activity citing concerns for the

5 Tips for Safe Bicycle Trips

There’s no better way to enjoy a beautiful summer day than with a bike ride with the family. When we think of bikes we think of healthy exercise, but we can sometimes forget that bikes are not just outdoor toys.  Several years ago, I was in a bicycle accident and my head hit the ground so hard.  Had I not been wearing a helmet, I am sure I would have had more than a fractured hip. That is just one safety measure of cycling, but there are many more than can protect you and your family.

Bicycle accidents account for 2% of all traffic fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, over 700 people die from bicycle injuries each year. Bike safety is important for everyone especially our children. 300,000 kids each year are hospitalized for bike injuries.

People most at risk are young kids ages 5-14
